There are some things in our lives that we don’t have full control, and a perfect example for this are the natural disasters like flood, hurricane and fire. These things cannot be controlled. When it comes to flood, it can somehow be prevented but you have to know if your home is built in a flood plain.

Living in flood plain areas makes it more prone to floods. How will you identify if you’re living in a flood plain?

●        FEMA offers maps of flood plain areas which you can check and see where the areas in your state and county are.

●        Identify the plant life in the area. There are trees and plants that grow in humid soil caused by occasional flooding.

●        Know the distance between the waterways to your area. The closer the waterways area to your home, the more it is determined to be a flood plain area.

●        The topography of your area will determine if you’re living in a flood plain.

●        Check out the whole land, this will help you determine if your area is prone to flood. You can check the animals being raised, are there nearby farms or building that does not have a trace of flood?

Once you know you are living in a flood plain, you can get an insurance for it in order to protect your property when a natural disaster, specifically flood occur. If this happened, you can always ask assistance from FEMA, you will just need to apply thru their website or via phone and give information like your bank account number and other things FEMA requires. Before applying, you should also check your eligibility. You can check your eligibility thru FEMA’s website and checking if the state or county you are living in is currently in a state of emergency, if it is, then you are eligible to apply for assistance. Once you have sent your application, you can check the status of your application within 24 hours thru their website or thru the telephone.

Living in a flood plain area can be dangerous, but the people who are living might not have the ability anymore to buy new homes. You should always be prepared and ready if you know you are living in such area. Aside from getting flood insurance for your home and asking for FEMA assistance, if you are considering a career or job in FEMA, you can just go to their Website and click on JOBS, and then type the position you want and search for available jobs in your area.
